Josh Friedman

As noted in a previous post, the planned Bournelyf Butterfly Garden will include participants of the Bournelyf Special Camp (BSC). Our project has been given a significant boost with a generous contribution from Pattie and Bruce Friedman, parents of Josh, a  BSC participant for a number of years. Their donation is being made in his memory. I asked Anne Debenny Catlin, Camp Program Director, to tell us a bit more about Josh and his experiences at the Camp.

Here is what Anne had to say. In November 2011 Bournelyf Special Camp lost one of its star campers, Josh Friedman, after a long brave fight with an illness. Josh came to Bournelyf nearly four years ago after hearing about Bournelyf  from another Camp family. Even though his time as a camper was relatively short in comparison to some campers who have attended for upwards of 13 years, Josh immediately fit in as if he had been a camper at Bournelyf his entire life!  Josh had the ability to brighten up anyone’s day, camper or staff, with his infectious personality, great sense of humor and wit.  Although small in stature, his heart and love for all things Bournelyf was huge, especially when it came to the Camp Show. Josh’s larger than life personality had become a much awaited part of the Camp Show each summer. His love for his family, friends, and the Phillies was seen daily in his approach to life. Even last summer, when he was seriously ill and making weekly trips to the hospital for treatments, Josh still managed to come to Camp nearly everyday for one session, which was truly a gift to all who know and love him. We had the opportunity to soak in one last summer with Josh making memories and him making us smile. Camp Shows at Bournelyf will definitely not be the same without Josh, but we are so thankful that his spirit can live on through the continued involvement and support from his siblings, Noah and Katie and his parents Pattie and Bruce.

The Bournely Butterfly Garden Team would like thank the Friedman family for choosing to create a living memorial for Josh with their contribution to our project. He will certainly be remembered by all those involved.

About chestercoextbutterfly

I am an apprentice Master Gardener with the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) Cooperative Extension Program. My local office is in Chester County. As part of my volunteer activity I am working with a team to develop a Butterfly Garden on the grounds of the  Church of the Loving Shepherd.  We will be using the creation of this garden as an educational program for some of the participants in the Bournelyf Special Camp which, is held every summer. Members of the congregation of the church will be involved as well as in the ongoing maintenance of the garden. The purpose of this blog is to document the project as it develops.
